Time to Listen

The units of 'Time to Listen' are intended for those who have already completed 'Learning to Listen'; they could also be used for follow-up after the 'Called to Listen' course.

The aims of the units are:

i. to give opportunities for participants to get in touch with their own life experiences and listen to those of other people;

ii. to provide some theoretical input to give structure to this experience, and expand knowledge;

iii. to give further opportunities to practise the listening skills learned during the 'Learning to Listen' course;

iv. to equip participants to listen more effectively to others who are experiencing the situations described in each unit or who are caring for such people.

SA brief description of each module:

Listening to Life's Changes - introduces the idea of loss and gain, and the differences between developmental and traumatic loss;

Listening to the Bereaved - adds an understanding of the process of grieving;

Listening to the Sick - relates the feelings associated with the loss to the experience of sickness;

Listening to the Elderly - does the same, and reinforces our grasp of the effects of loss;

Listening to the Depressed - the link here is not so obvious, except perhaps in the loss of hope, purpose and enjoyment of life;

Listening to Young People - helps us understand the changes that occur in adolescence and which can be key to the acceptance and support of young people.
